The Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was interested in starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
