A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
